Joe Flaherty, the comedic actor best known for his performances in the influential sketch comedy series “SCTV” and as a father on the short-lived NBC ensemble series “Freaks and Geeks,” died on Monday. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Gudrun Flaherty, who said that Mr. Flaherty died after a “brief illness.” She did not specify a cause, or say where he died. Among Mr. Flaherty’s characters were Guy Caballero, the sleazy president of the station, and Sammy Maudlin, an unctuous late-night talk show host. His character Count Floyd wore a cheap vampire costume while hosting a horror movie show, “Monster Chiller Horror Theater.” The joke was that the movies the program showed — such as “Dr. Tongue’s Evil House of Pancakes” — were seldom very scary, leaving Floyd holding the bag and often having to apologize to viewers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael McGrath, a Broadway character actor who shined in zany, feel-good musicals and won a Tony Award for “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” has died. McGrath died Thursday at his home in Bloomfield, New Jersey, said his publicist, Lisa Goldberg. “Michael McGrath was as wonderful offstage as he was on,” wrote Michael Urie in tribute. It has been almost two years since Josh and Melissa (Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong ) stumbled into the enchanted world of Schmigadoon, where “Oklahoma!” seemed to have collided with “Carousel,” and the Wells Fargo Wagon was always a-comin’ down the street. At the risk of being oxymoronic, it was a highly original parody. At the risk of profaning a wonderful show, the second season is even better. Melissa got it right away; Josh was a skeptic. But he was won over so completely that, as season 2 begins, Josh is the one who suggests that the couple take their static and as-yet-childless marriage back to the world of virtual nonstop happiness, where even that annoying leprechaun ( Martin Short ) can’t bum him out.

By Brook Joyner, CNNActor and comedian Steve Martin will host "Saturday Night Live" for the 16th time this weekend, joining longtime collaborator and former "SNL" cast member Martin Short. This will be the first time Martin has hosted since 2009. He is second to only Alec Baldwin for most appearances as host. Martin is the only person to ever host three times in one season, and he became a member of the coveted "Five-Timers Club" less than two years after his first hosting gig in 1976. He has also appeared as a special guest on the show more than a dozen times.

Eight years after the show’s debut, the podcast circuit across all storytelling genres has never been more crowded or competitive. But in today’s oversaturated market, could any one show prove to be as singularly culture-shaping — influential enough to help free an imprisoned person? “I remember a time when I could keep up on new podcast series, but nowadays that seems virtually impossible,” he added. CNN —Understandably determined not to mess with success, “Only Murders in the Building” returns with a second season that self-consciously plays to its strengths, while layering the new mystery laid out by its cliffhanger ending on top of the old one. It’s every bit as breezy and fun, with lots of winking references to “Season 2” (the podcast, naturally, but you get the idea). While the show perhaps inevitably doesn’t feel quite as fresh this second time around, it gets plenty of mileage out of those small touches and the general obsession with true crime. You can indeed, which doesn’t prevent “Only Murders” from living up to its modestly scaled ambitions and once again knocking ‘em dead. “Only Murders in the Building” begins its second season June 28 on Hulu.
